Adding EVs to Your Rental Fleet Without Disrupting Operations
Adding EVs to Your Rental Fleet Without Disrupting Operations
Why this keeps coming up
Electric vehicles now make up a fast-growing share of new fleet purchases across the rental industry, driven by manufacturer incentives, corporate sustainability commitments from long-term rental clients, and lower per-mile running costs on high-utilization vehicles. For operators who haven't run an EV fleet before, the vehicles are rarely the problem; the handover and charging workflow is.
The three places EV pilots go wrong
First, charging is treated as an afterthought rather than a step in the handover process, so a car comes back at 20% charge and goes back out at 20% charge. Second, staff aren't given a simple way to check charge state and range before handover, so they're guessing. Third, renters aren't told anything about charging etiquette or where to charge mid-trip, which shows up as complaints rather than repeat bookings.
A workable pilot structure
Start with a small number of EVs in a single class rather than converting a whole category at once. Add a charge and range check as a mandatory step in the pre-handover checklist, the same way a fuel check is mandatory today, so it can't be skipped by accident.
Set the renter's expectations
A one-page charging guide handed over with the keys, listing the vehicle's real-world range and the two or three nearest fast chargers, prevents most of the anxiety-driven support calls. Renters who understand the car before they leave the lot come back with far fewer complaints than renters who find out mid-trip.
