Contactless Check-In: What Renters Actually Expect Now
Contactless Check-In: What Renters Actually Expect Now
It's a preference now, not a health precaution
What started as a pandemic-era workaround has stuck around because it's simply faster for a straightforward pickup: a renter who's already verified and paid online doesn't want to stand in line to have the same information re-typed at a counter.
What contactless doesn't mean
It doesn't mean removing staff from the process entirely, especially for higher-value vehicles or first-time renters, where a human handover still catches problems (a licence issue, a mismatched name, a vehicle that isn't actually ready) that a fully automated flow can miss.
The minimum viable version
Identity and licence verification, payment, and the rental agreement completed online before arrival; a simple mobile flow to confirm the vehicle and note any existing condition issues at pickup; and a clear escalation path (a phone number or an on-site staff member) for anything that doesn't go smoothly.
Where it pays off most
Repeat customers and business travellers, who value speed the most and are the least likely to need hand-holding, benefit disproportionately from a genuinely fast contactless flow, and disproportionately notice when it isn't offered by a competitor.
